It may be a NEW YEAR

but things are much the same with the club.  Dues remain the same -- $15 a person or $20 for a couple.  If a husband and wife want separate mailings of the newsletter (to get the stamps used in the mailing) they will be charged at the single rate for each.

… and the officers remain the same: president Jack Zahn, vice president Tom Springer, treasurer Chris Frano and secretary Evie Bosse.

 

Calendar:

Feb. 21 – The club’s monthly meeting will feature Tom Springer with some examples of Private Dye Proprietary medicine stamps, including some he says you have never seen before.  APS Circuit Books also will be available Hawaii town cancels with stamps (from the collection of Henry Meyer, one of the club’s founders and an authority on Hawaii philatelic material.  Among the other countries in the books are Austria, Cuba, Switzerland, New Zealand, South America, the Netherlands and U.S. official including E3 used in nice condition.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Brake Supply Co. building off Ind. 57 in Vanderburgh Industrial Park on the north side of the highway across from the Shoe Carnival warehouse.  Enter the building through the front down, turn left and walk down the first floor hall to the boardroom.

3, Spectrum Eagle, stamps for presorted first class mail (Forever® priced at 25¢), six designs featuring an artist’s rendering of the bald eagle in white set against a sequence of six varying shades of reds, yellows, greens and blue, sold in pressure-sensitive (PSA) coils of 3,000 and 10,000, the first day city was Liberty, MO, with sales nationwide on the same day.  Printer is Avery Dennison, which means the stamps can’t be soaked.

6, New Mexico Statehood, com­memorative stamp (Forever® priced at 44¢) for the 100th anniversary of New Mexico’s statehood, one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of 20 stamps, the first day city was Santa Fe, NM, with sales nationwide on the same day.  Printer is Avery Dennison, which means the stamps

can’t be soaked off envelopes.

19, Aloha Shirts, commemorative stamps issued at the postcard rate (32¢), in five designs, each depicting a

different shirt, the first day city was Honolulu, HI, with sales nationwide on the same day.

19, Glacier National Park, a stamp issued at the international rate (65¢), featuring a scene of Logan Pass, part of the Scenic American Landscape series, the first day city was Kalispell, MT.

20, Dogs at Work, a set of four stamp issued at the retail first class mail (65¢) rate for the single-piece weighing more than one ounce and up to and included two ounces, the first day city was Merrifield, VA.

20, Checkerspot Butterfly, a single design in a square format for use on large greeting card envelopes or other irregular sized envelopes that require first class surcharge rate stamps (65¢), sold in panes of 20, featuring the official insect of the state of Maryland, first day city was Baltimore, MD.

20, Birds of Prey, five designs featuring the northern goshawk, the peregrine falcon, the gold eagle, the osprey and the northern harrier, issued at the rate for single-piece retail first class mail weighing more than two ounces and up to and including three ounces (85¢), the first day city was Washington, DC.

20, Lancaster County, PA, a single design featuring scenic look at an area known for its Amish farm life, issued at the international stamp rate ($1.05), part of the Scenic American Landscapes series, the first day city was Lancaster, PA.

20, Wedding Cake, one design at the 65¢ rate that is used for mailing wedding invitations in oversized envelopes or small gifts that require extra postage, part of the Wedding series that began in 2009, the first day city was Alexandria, VA.

20, Weather Vanes, five designs featuring 19th century weather vanes that are in the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, VT, issued in a first class mail large coil format (45¢ each), the first day city was Shelburne, VT.

20, Sailboats, a stamped post card at the postcard rate (32¢), one design, first day city was Oyster Bay, NY.

23, Bonsai, Forever® stamps for the current first class mail one-ounce rate (45¢), five designs featuring the common styles of “bonsai” (Japanese for “plant in a pot”, first day city was Sacramento, CA.

23, Purple Martin birds, stamped envelope (Forever® first class rate 45¢), first day city was Mulberry, FL.

23, Celebrating Lunar New Year: Year of the Dragon, com­memorative stamp (Forever® priced at 45¢) marking the Year of the Dragon with the fifth in the current series, featuring one design of the head of a colorful dragon against a brilliant blue sky, first day city was San Francisco, CA.

31, John H. Johnson, commemorative stamp (Forever® first class rate of 45¢), honoring the trailblazing publisher of Ebony, Jet and other magazine in addition to owning radio stations, cosmetics and other business, the 35th stamp in the Black Heritage series started in 1978, first day city was Chicago, IL.

 

February

9, Heart Health, another special issue to help raise public awareness about health and social issues, (Forever® stamp at the first class mail rate of 45¢), first day city was Washington, DC.

14, Love Ribbons, Forever stamps at the first class rate (45¢), in self adhesive sheet of 20 stamps, another in the series of “Love stamps”, although Colorado Springs, CO, was designated the first day of issue city post offices were instructed to begin selling the stamps as soon as they arrived so people could use them on Valentines.

14, Arizona Statehood, commemorative stamp (Forever® first class rate 45¢) noting that Arizona became the 48th state in the Union on Feb. 14, 1912, first day city was Phoenix, AZ.

16, Danny Thomas, commemorative stamp (Forever® priced at 45¢) honoring legendary entertainer Danny Thomas (on the 100th anniversary of his birth), the founder of renowned St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (on its 50th anniversary), one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of 20 stamps, the First Day City was Memphis, TN, with sales nationwide on the same day.  No other details available at this time.

22, Four Flags, four stamps (Forever® first class rate 45¢), part of the series featuring the American Flag this time with a single word “Freedom,” “Liberty,” “Equality” or “Justice” appearing on the stamps, first day city is Washington, DC.  Two printers are being used Ashton Potter and Banknote Corporation of America.

28, Sunshine Skyway Bridge, a stamp at the priority mail rate ($5.15) celebrating the long bridge of Tampa Bay in Florida, the first day city was Bradenton, FL.

28, Carmel Mission, a single Express Mail stamp ($18.95), honoring nearly 250 years of California history by featuring the second in what would become a chain of 21 Spanish missions along the coast of California in1770, the first day city was Carmel, CA.
